    Why put it in writing

    A rent receipt is thirty seconds of paperwork that settles arguments before they start: which month was paid, how much, and by what method. For cash payments it is the only record either side has — and in several states and cities, tenants who pay cash are entitled to one by law.

    Is a landlord required to give a rent receipt?

    It depends on where the property is: several states and cities require landlords to provide a receipt on request — especially when the tenant pays in cash — and it is good practice everywhere. Check your state or city rules; when in doubt, just give one.

    Why do rent receipts matter if the tenant pays in cash?

    Cash leaves no bank trail. The receipt is the tenant’s only proof of payment and the landlord’s only clean record — it protects both sides if there is ever a dispute about a month being paid.

    What should a rent receipt include?

    The date, the amount, the rent period it covers, the property address, who paid, who received, the payment method, and any remaining balance. This template covers all of them, plus a signature line for the landlord.

    Can I use this receipt for a partial payment?
