How the January 1 reset works: an example
A $15,000 judgment entered August 20, 2024, with nothing paid, as of August 20, 2026:
- Aug 20, 2024 → Jan 1, 2025: 134 days at 9.46% = $519.52
- Jan 1, 2025 → Jan 1, 2026: 365 days at 9.38% = $1,407.00
- Jan 1, 2026 → Aug 20, 2026: 231 days at 8.44% = $801.22
Total interest $2,727.74; balance $17,727.74, then about $3.47 a day. Leap years use a 366-day year, as in the CFO's daily-rate column.
Frequently asked questions
What is the current Florida judgment interest rate?
The latest rate in our data (checked October 13, 2026) is 7.87% a year, for judgments entered from October 1, 2026, as set by the Florida Chief Financial Officer under §55.03, Florida Statutes. The CFO sets each quarter's rate a month ahead, on December 1, March 1, June 1 and September 1 (§55.03(1)).
Does the rate on a Florida judgment change?
Yes, once a year. The rate in effect when the judgment is obtained applies until the end of that year; every January 1 after that it moves to the rate in effect that day, until the judgment is paid (§55.03(3)). A judgment entered August 20, 2024 at 9.46% switched to 9.38% on January 1, 2025 and to 8.44% on January 1, 2026. Judgments the clerk enters under §§55.141, 61.14, 938.29 and 938.30 keep their original rate.
Is Florida judgment interest simple or compound?
Simple. The statute sets an annual rate that accrues on the judgment until it is paid, and the CFO publishes it as a daily rate — the annual rate divided by the days in the year — which is how the calculator applies it.
Can a contract set a different rate?
§55.03(1) says nothing in it affects a rate of interest established by written contract or obligation. If the judgment is on a contract with its own post-judgment rate, use that rate with the "Other state or a rate in the judgment" option.
Other courts: the judgment interest calculator also covers federal judgments and California, Illinois, New York and Texas. Not legal advice: confirm the rate on the face of the judgment (§55.03(2) requires it) before relying on a figure.
